Greetings From Hoboken

"GREETINGS FROM HOBOKEN" captures a prosperous young city in its prime through the medium of the humble postcard, whose “Golden Age” just happened to correspond with Hoboken’s, from 1890 to 1910. Although postcards originated as an inexpensive way for people to stay in touch, in time, they have come to provide an important and detailed historical record.

Home to three major European steamship lines, the city grew from 43,000 to more than 70,000 residents in just two decades. Hoboken was transformed from a playground for mid-19 century New Yorkers – including the home of the cup-winning America yacht and the site of the first reported match game of baseball – into an industrial powerhouse, thanks to a bustling shipping trade and connections to the railroad system.

Postcards were a perfect medium of expression for a city bursting with civic pride and prosperity, eager to show off its fine new transportation hub, city hall, parks, social clubs, firehouses and churches to the folks back home. These subjects are among the more than 350 lavishly reproduced images from the Hoboken Historical Museum’s entensive collections, part of a 2008 exhibition.
